African stories are capsules, owned, made and preserved by culture. Africans who know what value they have always find ways to project these stories – their stories, to the world in whatever form of art they practice. One of such African storyteller is Kunle Afolayan who through the art of filmmaking showcases the beauty of the African culture, especially that of the Yoruba people of South Western Nigeria.

Aníkúlápó tells the story of a sojourner who finds his way to Oyo in search of greener pastures where he finds favor and things begin to change for good. Unfortunately, he found love in a forbidden place, longed for the abominable, and eventually got caught in the web of lust.

What will this man do to defy death, challenge death and be superior to death itself?

Aníkúlápó mbo – he who has death in his pouch is coming. 

What will he bring along with him? Will his arrival spell doom for all? Perhaps, he’s the savior everyone has ever imagined but never thought existed.

Produced and Directed by Kunle Afolayan as one of his slate projects with Netflix, Anikulapo is a work of art that tells a beautiful story through the eyes of culture and tradition, set in the pre-colonial era as far back as the 17th century of the Old Oyo Empire, it is sensational in every sense of it.

Exploring the Yoruba culture through language, festival, beliefs, leadership, costume, set design, and all the nine yards, Anikulapo was shot at KAP Film Village and Resorts with infrastructures built initially for the continuous use for film production and preservation of culture, with over 300 men working day and night for almost 90 days to bring the movie to life.

Veterans like Sola Sobowale, Taiwo Hassan, Moji Afolayan, Hakeem Kae Kazeem, Aisha Lawal, Adebowale Adedayo, Faithia Balogun, Bimbo Ademoye, and Kunle Remi to mention a few, wrought together their artistic prowess to bring the story to life.

Slated to be released on September 30, 2022, brace yourself to see a work of art that tells a dynamic story in an innovative way.
