The Next Wave of African Storytelling: KAP-SOPA Bootcamp Wraps Phase 1 with Motivating Embassy Send-Off

If there is one truth defining the modern landscape of African cinema, it is this: our strongest stories are born when we erase borders.

In a landmark initiative for West African cinema, the KAP-SOPA Pan-African Filmmaking Bootcamp – a strategic collaboration between KAP Film & Television Academy and Benin Republic’s Société de Productions Audiovisuelles (SOPA) has officially concluded its first four-week phase in Cotonou, Benin.

Selected through a rigorous process, 20 talented Beninese filmmakers have spent the past month immersing themselves in intensive theoretical training, mastering the foundational techniques of storytelling, directing, and production. But this is only the beginning of their journey.

A Special Farewell at the Nigerian Embassy

To celebrate the completion of Phase One, the participants and the KAP-SOPA delegation were honoured with a warm reception hosted by Her Excellency, Ambassador Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, at the Nigeria House, Cotonou.

Bidding the cohort farewell as they prepare to cross into Nigeria, Ambassador Adeola-Ibrahim underscored the cultural and economic vitalities of cross-border partnerships. She reaffirmed the Embassy’s support for initiatives that promote collaboration within Africa’s creative industry and encouraged the emerging directors and producers to seize this moment to learn, innovate, and create in the true spirit of Pan-Africanism while also sharing her enthusiasm to attend the cohort’s final graduation ceremony in Nigeria.

“This initiative is a shining example of how regional collaboration can empower African storytellers to craft authentic narratives that resonate on the global stage” she said.

Next Stop: 8 Weeks of Hands-On Production at KAP Film Village

For the participants, the past four weeks have been transformative, building not just technical knowledge, but the creative confidence required to navigate today’s evolving film industry.

Now, the cohort turns its eyes toward Phase Two in Nigeria: an immersive, eight-week practical residency starting with a one-week stint at the Academy’s school in Lagos before heading out to the iconic KAP Film Village & Resort for seven weeks. Under the direct mentorship of acclaimed filmmaker Kunle Afolayan and a cadre of top-tier industry professionals, these 20 filmmakers will step behind the camera to turn theory into high-value cinematic reality.
