Reel Circle Event Opens Directing & Cinematography Workshop at KAP Film & Television Academy

KAP Film & Television Academy, in partnership with the U.S. Embassy, launched an exciting new chapter for Nigerian filmmaking with a special edition of REEL CIRCLE.

This event marked the opening of an intensive Directing and Cinematography Workshop led by renowned U.S. industry professionals Angel Kristi Williams and Erin G. Wesley, aimed at empowering 20 selected beneficiaries with hands-on training.

An Inspiring Opening Speech by Will Stevens.

The event kicked off with a rousing speech from U.S. Consul General, Will Stevens, who highlighted the power of film to bridge cultures and inspire social change.

Before his address, Mr. Stevens toured the academy, exploring the vibrant KAP Hub, including its classrooms and the Afefeyeye restaurant, and expressed admiration for KAP’s dedication to building Nigeria’s creative future.

Honoring Nigerian Film Roots

Following the opening remarks, attendees were treated to a screening of *Ija Ominira*, the 1978 classic by Nigerian film legend Adeyemi Afolayan (Adelove).

The film screening served as a tribute to Nigeria’s cinematic heritage, demonstrating how one director’s vision helped shape the country’s film industry.

INSIGHTS FROM FILM INDUSTRY ICONS

A highlight of the event was the panel discussion on “Crafting the Director’s Journey.” Moderated by Gbemisola Afolabi, the panel included insights from Angel Kristi Williams, Erin G. Wesley, Kunle Afolayan and the legendary Tunde Kelani.

Each shared personal experiences on shaping narratives, balancing artistic vision within production realities, and the importance of collaboration in filmmaking.

Networking and Creative Connections

The event wrapped up with a fun networking session, allowing filmmakers, both established and emerging, to connect over cocktails and music.

Special guests included Nollywood actress Sola Sobowale, Ope Ajayi, Bayo Agbi, and others, creating a memorable evening for everyone passionate about filmmaking.

This Reel Circle edition was a promising start to an impactful workshop that will enhance the skills and creativity of the next generation of Nigerian filmmakers.
